گاهی در بعضی مناطق یا شهرها به دلیل عدم وجود بستر مخابراتی امکان گرفتن خط تلفن از مخابرات نمی باشد، از طریق تکنولوژی VOIP امکان انتقال خط تلفن از یک مکان به مکان دیگر بر بستر شبکه مهیا می شود.
لازمه انتقال خطوط وجود بستر شبکه می باشد یعنی مکان انتقال دهنده و مکان انتقال گیرنده باید ارتباط شبکه ای با یکدیگر داشته باشند، بستر شبکه از دو راه امکان پذیر است:
اول اینکه اگر فاصله دو مکان در حدی باشد که امکان زدن لینک وایرلس باشد می توان ارتباط شبکه ای را از این طریق ایجاد کرد. ولی اگر فاصله دو مکان دور باشد یا در مثلا در دو شهر متفاوت باشد می توان ارتباط فوق را از طریق اینترنت برقرار نمود.
بعد از اینکه ارتباط شبکه بین دو نقطه برقرار شد حال در هر کدام از مراکز دو دستگاه گیتوی قرار می دهیم و با انجام تنظیمات خطوط تلفن به مرکز دوم انتقال داده می شود، این خطوط در مرکز دوم تمام امکانات خطوط تلفن معمولی را دارا می باشد و می توان به آنها گوشی تلفن، دستگاه فکس، دستگاه کارتخوان و… را وصل نمود.
